The villa itself is an architectural gem, built in the late 18th century and surrounded by a beautiful classical garden and land art. The art collection&nbsp; primarily focuses on American and European contemporary art from the second half of the 20th century. It was originally put together by the Panza di Biumo family, particularly Giuseppe Panza, and later donated to FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) in the 1990s. The collection at Villa Panza features works by prominent artists such as Dan Flavin, James Turrell, Robert Irwin, and many others associated with the Minimalist and Conceptual art movements. Visitors can explore a wide range of artistic mediums, including installations, sculptures, paintings, and site-specific artworks. What makes Villa Panza significant is its way of displaying contemporary art, contrasting with classical architecture and gardens further emphasizing each element. PLAYING WITH LIGHTSAn interaction with both natural and artificial light enters the space, creating a lively atmosphere and further dimming the separation between inside and outside (through Irwin’s and Turrel’s windows). 2. CO-EXISTANCE OR APPRECIATION OF NATURE &nbsp; Land art, large windows, and the villa’s interaction and omage to it’s surroundings, is an evident form of co-existance and appreciation of nature. 3. MONOCROMES AND TEXTURES&nbsp; The villa emphasizes on colour and texture, throughout the selection of artwork. Creating texture by the use of colour in non-conventional ways. 4. BORGES Alhambra / Granada Twinkle and sprinkle of&nbsp; water, an impressive array of colour and shape, plants, flowers bushes, dance swiftly with the passing of the winds. Paradise (which etymologically, and deriving from ancient persia, means “enclosed Garden") in all its senses. On my way to the visit, I asked myself a seemingly obvious question, which is: why is the Alhambra of Granada of such importance today, as is for example La Sagrada familia in Barcelona… could it be reduced to symbolism? Long story short, for those of you who do not know much of the alhambra (like me) it is a Nasrid (Muslim dynasty) palace-city overlooking Granada, built as a fortified royal residence, made up of the stunning Generalife gardens (which where built later), the Alcazaba fortress (13th c.), the Nasrid Palaces&nbsp; (14th c.), and the Palace of Charles V&nbsp; (16 th c.), where water, architecture, gardens and light come together to create a vision of heaven on earth, or so is said… Paradise The group gathers, and the tour starts in the Gardens of the Generalife. As a garden fanatic, and with no research done on the generalife before, I was very pleasantly surprised! Random fun fact: I have been wanting to visit the Alhambra for some time now, as it is i would say (or as the master gardener once said), the greatest reference in spain for landscape design and architecture. The day I finally bought the tickets, i went running on the retiro park as i usually do. But, that day, I decided to take it slow, and go for a walk instead. I was looking up at the trees and was delighted to see so many cute little birds, 2 woodpeckers and other species i dont know. As i was looking up in the bramches, a man approached me, and gifted me a book. Super random experience but i have to say it happens quite often. Can you guess what book he gifted me?! Twinkle and sprinkle of&nbsp; water, an impressive array of colour and shape, plants, flowers bushes, dance swiftly with the passing of the winds. Paradise (which etymologically, and deriving from ancient persia, means “enclosed Garden") in all its senses. In the gardens and patios, water becomes a protagonist element repeated throughout as essential in Arab culture and specifically the Alhambra, as a symbol for purity. It was very soothing as well to hear the sprinkle of water. My favourite water element was the water stairway in the generalife, walking up the stairs under the cool&nbsp; shade of the surrounding bushes while dipping my fingers in the crisp water. I also loved the work on the flooring, such small smooth pebbles coming together to form geometric shapes and flowers…<img width="1152" height="2048" width_o="1152" height_o="2048" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/58a18fce29f53bbfacf690cf1b6ca5b8b953a677a292e99d4a870ec641c20faf/WhatsApp-Image-2026-09-06-at-17.32.11.jpeg" data-mid="252076825" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/58a18fce29f53bbfacf690cf1b6ca5b8b953a677a292e99d4a870ec641c20faf/WhatsApp-Image-2026-09-06-at-17.32.11.jpeg" />As we continued our tour through the gardens and into the main patio, we came across 4 parterres. Impressed was I, oh my oh my! by the rich symbolism.&nbsp; Each parterre associated with the four rivers of Paradise — water (life and purity), milk (nourishment and abundance), wine (pleasure and spiritual joy) and honey (sweetness and healing). The four parterres, surrounded by water, evoke the idea that paradise can be found on earth, and I agree. In the end we create our own reality… Pictures do not make it justice… Each parterre also had a pomegranate tree (Granada in Spanish), which produces the pomegranate fruit, considered heavenly in Islam and representing abundance and faith. For someone who loves symbolism, I recommend a visit to this magical place…I have also noticed the pomegranate in christian paintings, maybe showing us overlaps and similarities across religions. In contrast to other cultures, life in Arab culture is directed inwards&gt; through patios, privacy, etc. Facades of buildings are more austere, blending in with the city. Richness is nurtured and kept inside, inwards, which I find beautiful, as “abundance” can be found within. Continuing the tour… our guide Lucia,, is telling us of a recent big earthquake, which left almost no damages to the buildings.&nbsp; It made me think of the way construction was dealt with in the past, using mostly local materials. In this case, natural elements and barro *clay, which resisted the tremors, or twerking of the ground. Lucia also mentioned that 2.7 million people visit every year (that seems like a lot!), winning silver medal, after the most visited site in Spain&gt; la&nbsp; Sagrada familia. What does La Sagrada familia&nbsp; (haha I can only hear this song when I think of la sagrada familia) and the Alhambra of Granada have in common? From the outside they look very different, but in essence are they the same thing? Two languages or ways of expressing for the same message? We notice geometry, perfection, mathematics in everything. Here, geometry is perfection, and perfection is god, or its attempt to approach god. One of the rooms, first thing we notice is it resembles stalactites*honeycomb ceiling structure (muqqarnas), and in fact, it was designed on purpose to reference the cave of Hira and Muhammad's first revelation, where angel Gabriel's revelation is explained in the quran. And perhaps this is what makes the alhambra so interesting&gt; it all seems perfectly calculated, as if everything had its purpose, but some things remain a mystery! We move into the patio, 12 lions, many theories on why 12, some say the months, the zodiac…&nbsp; As we move through the palace, we see a christian painting in one of the niches, 3 in fact, all made before the inquisition, commissioned by Mohammed the V himself, becoming a physical record of different religious worlds occupying the same space. Which takes me to the question&gt; do different cultures and religions really tell such different stories, or are they simply different ways of expressing something we all share? Water twinkle and sprinkle, corner here corner there, corners everywhere (labyrinth style for protection). Flowers bloom, paradise in the room. Gated garden, paradise’s etymology. Water here, water there, water everywhere. Trees tall, shades cool. Sacred geometry. Light. Sensorial experience beyond the senses (god). He was a highly original and imaginative artist known for his surreal and fantastical imagery, usually depicting religious and moral scenes, such as sin, hell and the afterlife. His paintings are often characterized by highly detailed, fantastical landscapes and vivid, almost nightmarish imagery. The afterlife and Hell As before-mentioned, he is particularly known for his depictions of the afterlife and Hell, often filled with torment and punishment for sin. By juxtaposing good and evil, questions of morality arise. 2. The human condition and morality Bosch often depicted the struggles of humanity in his paintings, exploring vices and temptations as a warning to viewers. 3. The fantastical Bosch's paintings are filled with imaginative and dream-like imagery, including mythical creatures, demons, and fantastical landscapes. Trying to picture the unknown as a way to gain control over the anxiety of not knowing. 4. Naturethe artist was known for his detailed and precise depictions of nature, including landscapes, plants, and animals. Some of his paintings suggest a deep concern for the environment and the impact of human actions on the natural world. This theme is even more relevant today as environmental issues continue to gain importance and people seek to minimise their impact. Bosch's paintings continue to captivate audiences today, his imaginative and thought-provoking imagery has made him one of the most important and influential painters of the Northern Renaissance, different to the classical Renaissance of Da Vinci, Caravaggio and Michelango... p.s: Hieronymus Bosch is one of my favourite artists! I was thrilled to revisit his work at Palazzo Reale in Milan last December. I first encountered his work at the Prado Museum several years ago and was immediately drawn to his unique style. The brilliant color palette, meticulous attention to detail, and imagination depicted in his pieces always strike me! Understanding the time period in which he lived, gives one a broader understanding of his work, and highlights the recurring theme that fear of the unknown is a universal human element. Will we ever break this pattern of thought? Perhaps living in the now and reaching internal peace is the answer... Under the macrotheme of ecology, and going “back to the roots” we find the following themes: 1. Nature invasion Evergrowing wish to connect to nature, elements of the natural world (leaves, stems, trees..) enter the realm of interiors. A&nbsp; link to biophilia emerges, where design intends to mimic natural systems. 2. Primitive touch&nbsp; Perceived through craftmanship, use of raw material and organic design. Emerges from a strong desire to leave technology and overconsuption behind, nostalgia and reflection on the “good old days” is prominent.&nbsp; 3. Moire Playing with optical ilusions, hat are naturally present in the grain and fibers of wood, translating them into pattens similar to traditional Moiré textiles. Roots itself from observation of landscapes and natural materials.&nbsp;Emphasizes texture and colour.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; 5. Irridescent Tapping into another dimension, the unattainable. Sabine Marcelis table, mirror from the church deconsacrated, Objects of common interest translucent furniture... 4. Uplifting sensesDesign goes beyond touch and sight, exploring taste, smell and sound. Music is greatly implemented in the design experience, emphasizing the “story” or concept of the product. Taste and smell is tackled through creative snacks, or sensory paths, creating a 360 unforgetable experience. &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; Every year comes with new discoveries. In this edition, I rediscovered nature and our desire to strengthen our relationship with it, (through craftmanship, use of raw materials),&nbsp;moiré as a means to enhance colour and texture, and last but not least, exploration of design products enhanced by experience through the senses smell, taste, sound and touch. This is my 5th Salone del Mobile, and it seizes to surprise me. The city is vibrant, you walk around in busy streets with a warm sun and bright colours, textures and furniture showcased around, free drinks, live music, experimental jazz and techno, new design trends, materials, techiniques fresh ways of thinking, exchaning thoughts... The fashion show was set in a "shabby chic" dollhouse in Milan, featuring children, everyday household items, and cc-tapis rugs as decorations. The workshop was free, we let our creativity dance. All ideas where welcomed. Working in groups, we came up with a concept that would contrast the existing garden, but that would at the same time celebrate the mining history of Wakefield. For me, it was about breathing life into what was once just an empty patch of grass, turning it into a garden that naturally connects the gallery with the old Rutland Mills by the River Calder. Inside you can find modern British art, “including works by Ben Nicholson, Patrick Heron, L.S. Lowry, Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore”. Outside, you encounter Tom Stuart Smith’s vibrant garden. After establishing contact, we met and I had the chance to learn first-hand about this wonderful project! Victor Edalia Mukolwe, an urban farmer born and raised in the slums of Kibera, discusses the challenges of unemployment and the need to create opportunities for themselves. Frustrated with&nbsp; the issue of illegal dumping in the slums, Victor started a youth group which collected the garbage, aiming to create a cleaner environment for their community. After realizing that clearing dumping sites alone wasn't a sustainable solution, Victor proposed planting trees and eventually transitioned to farming as a more effective way to prevent re-dumping. Victor explains the transition to hydroponic farming, which allows for year-round cultivation, saves space, conserves water, and minimizes soil-borne diseases. During the pandemic, Victor distributed produce to vulnerable families in the community, supplementing government relief efforts with fresh vegetables. Victor shares his passion for cooking, developed through training from a professional chef, and expresses a desire to work as a cook in the future. In the interview, Victor discusses the challenges of sustaining the hydroponics farm financially, including the cost of nutrients and limited water supply. He plans to scale the project by collaborating with other youth groups and exploring commercial opportunities like supplying produce to restaurants. Victor's humanitarian efforts earned him recognition from the government, which granted him a lease for the land he uses for farming. In hydroponics (hydro, meaning water and ponos meaning labour,) water does all the work, soil is not needed. Weeding therefore is not necesarry, you have more space for plants and you save around 80 per cent more water. Why is this relevant right now? In erratic climate conditions, farming and growing crops becomes ever more difficult. This hydroponics solution is not suggested as a replacement to traditional agriculture, but as a safety net when it doesn't rain. These released nutrients can potentially catalyze the bloom of pytoplankton, which essentialy is “the base of aquatic and marine food chains”. Thus, making glaciers vital in the essence of ocean life. Glacier melt also sustains “stream habitats for plants” animals and also peaople, making glaciers vital not only for oceans, but also for wildflife and sustainable communities. Covering around 10% of the planets surface, glaciers play a crucial role in the maintenance of sustainable communities, wildlife, and aquatic systems. Aditionally, these grandious bodies of ice, serve as the largest reservoirs of freshwater, holding about 69% of the worlds freshwater. Rapid glacial melt caused by global warming, can affect a rise in sea level, causing flooding and other natural disasters. Overall, preserving glaciers is necessary. Glaciers in Iceland Around 11% of the country is covered in ice, being an important source of water and energy. Unfortunately, rising temperatures due to global warming are causing these glaciers to shrink at an alarming rate, threatening not only Iceland's environment but also its economy. Also, going back to the unmeasurable essence of nature, some elements or aspects of life can not be described or understood, there lies the mystery, an infinite space where reflection can take place. Our obsession to know, grasp and understand everything can be soothed with the acceptance that most things are out of our control. One last comment, I felt a bit uneasy and uncomftarble with the thought of taking a plane and driving around, adding on to the pollution and not making a real effort to preserve the environment. This trip opened my eyes to this, traveling with purpose, and being aware of the impact you have.
